History of curry
Did you know that:
the original Indians were called Harrapans, and ate mainly wheat with their meat? Rice was only introduced later, from Thailand.
many Indians eat a vegetarian diet?
Did you know that curry used to be called ‘turry’? In fact, ‘turry’ comes from the Hindustani word for ‘turcarri’, which is what the Indian people used to call their wonderfully warm and aromatic hotpots. But the British turned ‘turry’ into ‘curry’ – and then it just stuck!
Curry is one of the oldest spice blends in the world and the proportions of spices used in the mix vary from region to region. For example, both Bombay and Madras reckon they were the first to invent curry and each city has its own special blend. And while Bombay curries are more spicy, the Madras south Indian style is much warmer and tends to use more coconut.
So now all the traditions of the great Indian art of curry making have been poured into the melting pot of our new, unique Around the World range of sauces – but adapted to give you the freedom to easily experience more variety and excitement in your everyday meals.
