History of Rice |
|
Did you know that:
- most white rice has only 5% of the goodness of the whole grain – but because Uncle Ben's rice is pre-steamed, it retains up to 80% of its natural goodness?
- in India, Basmati rice is only used for special occasions, like weddings?
- "Basmati" in Hindi means "fragrant"?
- wild rice is not actually a rice grain, but the seed of a special grass?
- wholegrain rice is literally the whole of the rice grain, with all the goodness locked in?

Did you know that rice is one of the most ancient foods known to man?
Yet rice didn't reach the West until the end of the 17th century, when slaves from West Africa started bringing it into the United States. In fact, our own brand name, Uncle Ben's, comes from an African-American grower. His crop in Texas was always grown to such a high standard that people would use the phrase "as good as Uncle Ben's" as a benchmark for excellent rice.
Then, years later, Gordon L Harwell chose the same name when launching his company that offered the same top quality, nutritious rice. And, to this day, we painstakingly keep to that same high standard set so many years ago by our Texan namesake.
But what's so special about Uncle Ben's rice?
Some say it's the wonderfully subtle, unique flavour, and the softness of the grains. Others, that it's so easy to cook, and never ever sticks. But what they may not know is that they're also making a good nutritious choice.
It's well known, of course, that rice is a great provider of carbohydrates. But it's complex carbohydrates – not the simple carbohydrates of denatured grains – that the body really needs. That's why Uncle Ben's unique milling process packs more nutrients into every grain, and then our special drying process seals in that goodness.
So while most white rice contains only 5% of the natural nutrients of the whole grain, with Uncle Ben's, you get more than 80%.
And our wholegrain rice provides even more goodness, because each grain is kept intact with its surrounding bran layer. This layer contains vital nutrients such as magnesium and phosphorous, which are essential for a healthy metabolism and strong bones. Since our wholegrain rice only takes 10 minutes to cook – less than half the time of standard wholegrain – you can enjoy all the goodness of wholegrain rice quickly and easily.
And, as if that wasn't enough, Uncle Ben's is continually coming up with new meal ideas. So this gives you the confidence to be more adventurous in the kitchen and cross culinary borders in your search for tasty, and healthy, delights! | |
